'Nathan-has consented to- accept nomination for• their ticket in the Harbour Board election; Mr. Nathan.'iwas^a member of, the board from :1913*t0 1917 sas one of the shipping interests' representatives. There was -no- occasion, to bring forward criticism of '•■■:-'the':^' general- ;"workin.g policy of the .board, said Mr. Nathan. Since the formation' of, the board in 1880 ;.it had been. extremely;fortunate in" having on board after board ; nien . with" • marked \ ability in. finance and general policy.: The .board's werMin an extremely sound position, enabling the accumulation of reasonable 'reserve funds. These funds, between £300,000 and £400,000, were actively employed in the board's business. He would jealously guard against any attempt to interfere with the present' financial structure of the board. The board had always been good employers* many men remaining in its service' until they retired on superannuation.
