Mr. Robert Davidson Veitch has been appointed electrical engineer to the Timaru Borough Council to fill the va ancy caused by the death of Mr. A. E, Watkins, states a Press Association telegram. There were 21 applicants. Mr. Veitch was at one time engineer to the Otago Power Board, and is at present engineer to the South Canterbury Power Board.
The sympathy of members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce was extended last evening to the relatives of Messrs. G. W. McLean and Guy Johnston. The president, Mr. R. H. Nimmo, spoke feelingly of the services given by Mr. McLean and Mr. Johnston and mentioned that Mr. Johnston had been a member of the council for 39 years.
Mr. G. A. Maddison, who has been Mayor of Hastings for fifteen years (from 1922 to 1929 and from 1933 to 1941) has decided not to seek re-elec-tion at the next municipal elections.
Mr. W. I. J. Blyth. of the Wellington Carriers and Customs Agents, will be a candidate, as a representative of payers of dues other than on ships, at the forthcoming election for members of the Wellington Harbour Board.
Mr. T. P. Fotheringham, inspector for New Zealand of the Union Bank, left Wellington today on a visit to North Island branches.
Mr. Herbert Vogt, a visitor from the United States, who is studying industrial conditions in New Zealand, is in Wellington, having spent ten days in the North Island. . He will be here until Friday evening, when hewill go south. He will return to Wellington on February 19.
Sir Theodore Rigg, director of the Cawthron Institute, Will return to Nelson tonight.
The Hon. W. Barnard will leave for the South Island tonight.
Mr. A. W. Nisbet, organiser of emergency training under the Department of Supply, is visiting Auckland.
Mr. C. A. Furlong, Government reception officer attached to the Department of Internal Affairs, returned to Wellington from Auckland today.
Mr. W. B. Darlow has been appointed representative of the Auckland Harbour Board on the Chamber of Commerce council following the retirement from the positon of Mr. J. B. Donald.
Dr. R. J. Mcllroy, Ph.D., M.Sc, A.1.C., of Hamilton, has been appointed lecturer in chemistry at the Canterbury University College. Dr. Mcllroy graduated at the Victoria University College, Wellington, and the Birmingham University. He has been engaged in agricultural research at the Ruakura Animal Research Station since his return from England in 1938.
Mr. Walter Norwood, manager of Dominion Motors, Limited, who is leaving shortly for America, was farewelled by members of the Wellington Rotary Club yesterday.
Wing Commander S. Wallingford, New Zealand liaison officer at the Air Ministry in London, will return to NewZealand shortly for duty at Air Force headquarters. Succeeding him as liaison officer will be Squadron Leader F. R. Newell, who has worked with Wing Commander Wallingford as assistant liaison officer for the past 18 months.
