CROQUET

WELLINGTON TOURNEY

The twenty-first annual tournament of the Wellington Provincial Croquet Association opened today at Lower Hutt and Petone greens, with the centre at Riddiford Park. The weather was per* feet and the greens excellent.

Mrs. W. Austin, president of the Wellington Alsociation, in asking the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. J. W. Andrews) to open the tournament, congratulated the district on obtaining city status, and Mr. and Mrs. Andrews on being the first Mayor and Mayoress. Mrs. Austin also thanked the deputy Mayor, Councillor J. Mitchell, who is chairman of the reserves committee, on the excellent parks and reserves provided, and Mr. E, Hutt. superintendent of reserves, for the w^y in which they were maintained. Thanks were due to the Hutt Valley clubs for throwing open their greens for' tournament use,

There were, she said, 249 entries, which was excellent considering the difficult times. The management of the tournpment would be in the hands of Mrs. Boocock.

In declaring the tournament open, Mr. Andrews said he appreciated the congratulations of the president. He hooed all the visitors would feel themselves free to visit the various attrac* tions in Lower Hutt, especially the fernery.

In this morning's play in the handicap doubles Bund and Lindsay won, 26-13, from Cleland and May; Clex'k and Stonehouse won, 26-9. from Frost pnd Walsh: and Hogan and Coles won, 26-11, fror*"1 Pflweon and Millar.
