CYCLE ROAD RACE
SOUTH ISLAND EVENT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. The annual cycle race from Waimate to Christchurch of 135 miles was held today in fine weather. There were 48 starters. In a desperate finish I Sutherland (Christchurch) got up to beat H. T. Smither (Wigram) by half a wheel. These two came on to the showgrounds, where the race finished, together, with Smither slightly in the lead. Within ten feet of the tape Sutherland forged ahead to snatch victory. The third man appeared 10 seconds later. The fastest time was secured by M. M. Annett, 6hr 10mm Bsec. Annett and two other scratch men arrived together, and there was another exciting tussle for the fastest time. W. Hansen, of Onehunga, had bad luck, puncturing three times and eventually retiring.
