TURF NOTES

ASTONISHING RETURN

CUP TO SLY FOX

ACCOUNTANT WINS

INCREASED INVESTMENTS

MASTERTON REHANDICAP

REMINDER FOR OWNERS

THE BUZZER'S WIN

ATTRACTIVE OTAKI EFFORT

An astonishing thing. happened at the Otaki Maori Racing Glub's Spring Meeting at Otaki on Saturday. The Buzzer, one of the proved and outstanding stayers in the Dominion, was allowed by a discerning public in front of the totalisator board to go out paying a win dividend just short of double figures. , It was not as though The Buzzer, who has resumed racing after a lengthy spell this season, had been showing no evidence of form. He had already had three sprint races, and in the last two of them, at Marton and Foxton, he had finished very powerfully just to miss the money. Moreover, the stable apprentice, D. W. Redstone, had been riding him in all his races, and on Saturday the allowance enabled this class horse to run with only 8.7 on his back. The Buzzer is in the New Zealand Cup with 8.6, and Saturday's win did not render him liable to rehandicap. He might yet win another race such as the Waverley Cup,, for which he has been entered, and still not come back into the handicapper's hands for the Riccarton two-miler. The Buzzer began from the outside marble on Saturday and he soon pulled his way to fourth, with Old Surrey, Gaelic Song, and Master Cyklon the trio ahead. Pulling all the time, his rider allowed him to go from the five furlongs, and after he had joined Old Surrey on the home turn he drew away in the straight, not being extended to ward off challenges from Meamea and Homily. It was the most attractive New Zealand Cup trial yet witnessed this season. i Meamea and Homily both finished strongly for the other, dividends, Meamea showing a touch of his old ability. Master Cyklon was fourth, then Little Robin, Old Surrey, and Pearl of Asia. Colonel Bogey was last to complete. Pearl of Asia was a very pronounced favourite, but she ran a long way below her Foxton form. She moved up from last going into the back, ranging alongside Little Robin, who had been some lengths ahead of her, but that was the only time she ever heartened her supporters. A TRENTHAM VICTORY. Enrich, the full-brother to Globe Trotter, opened his three-year-old account in the Hema Te Ao Handicap, which did not prove such a hard race to win as seemed likely at the acceptance. Enrich was always in the van, at first with Sleeveless and then with Screen Star and Trench Law, and over the last furlong he battled on just too well for Trench Law, though he was flat out to succeed. It was a creditable performance, but hardly an outstanding one. However, the colt is one likely to improve with i the race. Trench Law joined issue from the half-mile and he forced the best out of his victor. Over longer distances he should be worth keeping in mind. Noble Fox, one of the last out, also entered the fray on the turn, but he never looked like doing better than third. Sleeveless, squeezed back along the rail after being in front for a couple of furlongs, was then running on again under the whip over the closing section. Sir Crusoe was obviously in need of a race arid was backed accord- • ingly, beating home only Screen Star, who was dropping out on the turn I after temporary prominence. Sporting ! Gift was last till he passed Sir Crusoe I and Screen Star in the straight.

A fine morning turned to very dull and somewhat bleak weather for the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Spring Meeting on Saturday, but people were already on their way to the course and the attendance was very large. The track was in capital order. The investments amounted to £25,447 (£12,271 win* £13,176 place), compared with £22,933 under the single-pool system last year, an increase of £2514. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.): MELBOURNE, October 13. High Caste, and Beaulivre have arrived. They travelled well. Beaulivre will start in the Caulfield Cup. Panka will not run in the Caulfield Cup and Gold Salute is a doubtful M. McCarten said Lucrative was better now than at any stage of his career. He expects the colt to reverse the positions with Pandect in the Victoria Derby. A Sydney message says that though the jockey T. Webster stated that Mosaic's failure in the Randwick Plate on Saturday was caused by serious interference from Dashing Cavalier, stable connections express the opinion that it is more likely due to a painful eye injury received in last Monday's Metropolitan. Webster, who will have the mount on Reading himself, thinks Mosaic will win the Melbourne Cup.
