WAR REQUIREMENTS

NATIONAL COMMITTEE

ARMY & CIVIL NEEDS

The Minister of Health (the Hon. :H. T. Armstrong) has reaffirmed the I appointment of the National Medical Committee which was first constituted in 1936 and evolved the present procedure in use for the medical examination of recruits for the Army. ■ Referj'ence is made in the National Service i Emergency Regulations, 1840, to this committee, which is to advise the Government on medical matter-s arising out of the war. The personnel of the committee is as follows: — Dr. M. H. Watt, Director-General of Health (chairman). Colonel F. T. Bowerbank, Direc-tor-General of Medical Services (Army). Sir Donald McGavin, representing the British Medical Association. Mr. F. J. Fenton, Department of Health (secretary). ARMY AND CIVIL NEEDS. Besides advising the Government on medical matters connected with' the war, other functions of the committee are to ensure that the requirements of the Army so far as medical personnel is concerned are fully met and that the balance between Army and civilian medical needs is preserved. For this purpose the committee has the responsibility of giving prior approval for the release of medical men for service in the Army. Administrative action arising out of any decision of this committee is the responsibility of the Department of Health. . - MEDICAL BOARDING. Medical examinations and medical boarding are also controlled by the National Medical Committee. In order to secure proper supervision in medical boarding provision has been made for regional control by medical men who are designated regional deputies. These are responsible to the Minister of Health for the proper conduct of medical examinations. The Minister has appointed the following medical men to act in this capacity:—Auckland, Dr. D. N. W. Murray; Hamilton, Dr. G. W. Gower; New Plymouth, Dr. W. R. Wade; Wanganui, Dr. Douglas Wilson; Napier, Dr. F. N. Harvey; Wellington, Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson; Nelson, Dr. J. P. S. Jamieson; Christchurch, Dr. C. T. H. Newton; Timaru, Dr. W. H. Unwin; Dunedin, Dr. R. A. H. Fulton; Invercargill, Dr. A. F. R. Crawford.
