RAILWAY EYESORES
PART TO BE PLANTED
Writing in 'connection with the appearance of the railway reserve opposite the main arrival platform at Wellington, referred to by the Wellington Beautifying Society, the General Manager of Railways, Mr. E. Casey, admitted that the present position was not altogether satisfactory. Portion of the land was now leased, and the matter was being taken up with the lessees with a view to ascertaining whether they were prepared to improve the appearance of their land. Arrangements were being made to clear off grass and weeds on the land not leased, and to remove two old sheds. A post and rail fence would be provived. The land near the No. 1 portal of the Tawa Flat deviation was now available and could be planted at a convenient time. He had arranged for the Department's forestry officer to get in touch with the society. Steps had been taken to clear the area near the floating dock of weeds, but it could not be made available for planting as it would be required in the future.
Mr. G. H. Davis, the recentlyappointed Railway Department representative on the society, said that the Department had never been enthusiastic about the planting of railway Jand, and was opposed to putting in anything which would result in the public streaming across the main railway lines. The land near the floating dock would be absorbed in connection with the railway-yard. It seemed inadvisable to put 3n any works which were bound to be only temporary.
