THE "ARMY QUEEN"
SATURDAY'S GARDEN PAINTY
Although rain fell heavily on Saturday afternoon, the morning was clear, and a considerable crowd was attracted to "Homewood," the lovely home at Karori of Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland, who had generously lent the grounds for a garden party in aid of Miss Patricia Gledhill, "Army Queen" m the Plunket Society's Carnival. More tharf,. 300 friends and supporters attended either in the morning or the afternoon, and a crowd of soldiers from the Trentham Gamp attended in support of their queen. Their numbers were" swelled later in the afternoon by the arrival of the group of officers.
Civilians as well as. the men in khaki were directed by members of Miss Gledhill's committee anc." a number of other friends to tlie many places of interest in "Homewood's" grounds, and jHfJiile some inspected t£e brilli-antly-plumaged "Jjifds *in ihe ' aviaries, others viewed the blooms in. the conservatories and wandered jii the recesses of the ferneries and glowworm cave. Morning visitors" played tennis or swam, and' the • gusty rain in the afternoon did not prevent a huniber of guests from swimming in the spacious pool. Organised games were played in the large garages and afternoon tea was afterwards served in the pavilion. Indoors, Mrs. Sutherland entertained a number of friends at bridge in support of the society. Although it was unfortunate that bad conditions prevented a very much greater attendance, the 300-odd who did visit "Homewood" ' helped considerably towards adding to the society's funds and in supplementing the queen's voting list.
