TWO GIRLS DROWNED
SOUTHLAND RIVER TRAGEDY

Tv^o girls were' drowned in the Aparima Sivers, - Riverton, .early thisafternoon," They were, Joyce Smith, aged '16, whose parents' reside in Dunedin, and Marjorie- Corbett, ,aged 16$. ; A party of twelve girls from St. Vincent's Orphanage, of the Dunedin Convent of Mercy, were spending a holiday in RivertOn. The girls were drowned near a bridge on the main road at a point where the bathing pool shelves sharply. As she stepped into deep water when paddling, Joyce Smith seized the legs of a Riverton girl who was bathing. The latter shook herself free and tried to hold Joyce Smith, but she disappeared. The clothes of Mary Corbett were found on the bank, and though her movements were not seen, it is thought she went to the .assistance .of Joyce Smith and got into difficulties. Joy6e Smith's body was recovered late this evening; Mary Corbett's was locate and will be recovered by dragging in the morning. ■
