VEGETABLE PRICES
* (To the Editor.)
Sir,---I would be fery grateful if any of your correspondents could enlighten me on the subject of' the high prices of vegetables. Whilst visiting in the country I had a short conversation with a Chinese market gardener, and he informed me that he was receiving lid per case for lettuce. Out of this amount he has to pay 4d per case for cartage, Id for handling fee at the market, and one or two other small items, bringing down the price he actually receives to 3d per case. Now, Sir,'as there are about 36 lettuces in a case, why should we have to pay from 4d to 7d each for lettuce, and who is getting this huge profit, as it cannot be the grower?—l am, etc;,
LETTUCE-KNOW,
