NORMANDALE CROSSING
<To the Editor.)
Sir,—l trust you will find some small space in yoijr paper to publish this protest against the closing of the Normandale railway crossing, which was reported upon in your paper recently. Mr. Mackley,- General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, was present at a meeting of the Normandale United Progressive Association, of which I am a member, when our views were placed before him. • - . The majority of residents of the hill do not want the expenditure of a large sum of money on the erection of a ramp or overhead bridge, but consider it a gross injustice to close a road which has been open for 60 to 70 years without giving reasonable consideration to people owning property in this locality. The suggested danger will not be overcome if we are compelled to use the crossing via Marsden Street, which is one of the narrowest bottle-necked streets in Lower Hutt, apart altogether from the fact that we still have to cross the railway from the Western Hutt Road, and again cross all traffic at the west side of the Hutt Bridge where there have already been too many: accidents. " All we ratepayers of this district ask for is that if the crossing must be closed then consideration be given to our suggestion that a crossing be opened up approximately 60ft southwards facing Bridge Street. This crossing could be built up from the spoil which has to be carted away in any case in the formation of the new Western Hutt Road—l am, etc., HUMBUG.
