A COLLEGE BAND

WHAT ENTHUSIASM WILL DO

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

WANGANUI, July 17,

Claimed to be the largest of its kind in New Zealand, the Wanganui Technical College Military Band is an, example of what enthusiasm will do. Six months ago there was no band, but Mr. M. P. Byrnes, one of the masters of the college, set out to form one. Ninety per cent, of today's players did not know a note of music six months ago, but assiduous application; and practice have brought them to a really high standard. Quite a number are having private tuition. Difficult music is not attempted, as players are continually leaving the school, but tha band is fulfilling its purpose, of playing melodious tunes in tune. More than £300 has been spent by the boys on instruments. There are nineteen clarinets, seven cornets, three tenoS horns, five saxophones, three trombone^ 3 basses, 4 drums, and a; euphonium. The school generously donated £40 to the band fund, and despite the heavy expenditure the band is financially sound. Br. Byrnes is advising pupils at primary schools to-start learning some instrument so that they will be able to join the band if they attend the Wanganui Technical College.
