BADMINTON

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH

DEFEAT OF ROUSSELL

With C. S. Sheerin scoring'a sensational straight-out victory over E. A. Roussell, a member of the New Zealand team, and later, teaming with Miss Joyce McDonald, beating Roussell and Miss N. Fleming, also of the New Zealand team, the representative badminton match between Wellington and Manawatu at the Winter Show Stadium on Saturday night had plenty of excitement. Wellington won the match by 14 rubbers to two. A number of the games were close and the youthful Manawatu players did well against Wellington's strongest team.

Sheerin has been showing promise of developing Into a first-rate player. He defeated Roussell Jn three sets at tho Palmerston North tournament a few weeks co, but Roussell then was in poor form and the defeat was ascribed more to that circumstance than to Sheerin's brilliance. On Saturday uiglit, there could be no question that Sheerin has, the highest promise. He was quick about tho court aud his defence was strong. His offensive attack, chiefly with a heavy smash, was exceptionally good and ha made mincemeat of Boussell's services. He was the dominating factor in the Manawatu defeat of Wellington's top mixed doubles pair, outplaying Roussell, who has tho reputation of one of the strongest mixed doubles players in the country. The Wellington combination, however, was far from good.
