PETONE AND ORIENTAL
Oriental made' a better showing in the game against Petone, at Petone, than the score would indicate, and give promise of holding their own mv the top division.
During the first half the Oriental pack, headed by the All Black "Dalton, was definitely on top, except in the set scrummages, and the Oriental backs made it hot for the Petone defence. Petone played a beautiful defensive game, and kept their line intact, but two fine penalties by Rowland gave Oriental a handy lead. His second kick was from five yards on the Oriental side of half-way. Right on half-time, Knowles scored a heat try, which was unconverted. Petone got into their stride early in the second half, and before long took charge of the game. After a few
minutes' play, C, O'Halloran, the Petone half, potted a field goal. After this, the Petone backs, who previously had not been working too well, quickly piled up the points. Knowles scored again, and Fairbairn scored twice. Two of the tries were converted by Jones,' and O'Halloran kicked a penalty. For Oriental, Rowland kicked another penalty. The final score was: Petone 23, Oriental 9.
