UNIVERSITY SHAPE WELL

Conditions were all in favour of a fast open game at the Eastbourne Recreation Ground and a good ring of enthusiasts thoroughly enjoyed the season's opening in which University beat Eastbourne comfortably. The game was mainly confined to the forwards, but there was always the possibility of some University brilliance in the rearguard which made the game intensely interesting. • / The Eastbourne forwards, most capably led by Berry, played good football, -but fast breaking by the University forwards nullified any advantage from possession of the ball. Added to this was a definite reluctance amongst the Eastbourne backs to go for their opponents fast and low. The University backs were much the better combination on the day, and after a few games should make a very strong combination. Whenever opportunity offered, Rae gave good service to his backs.

Young, the dlever right winger for University, quite nonplussed the defence in scoring a try after a dazzling run from- halfway and Tricklebank later scored brilliantly. McVeagh had led off the scoring in the first minute of the game, Rae scored an opportunist try, and with Kissel kicking a penalty goal and O'Regan dropping a neat field goal near the end of the game, University's total reached 19. Eastbourne's only score came from a penalty kick by Dellabarca. University 19, Eastbourne 3.
