Much of the play in the opening half of the Hutt-St. Patrick's College Old Boys match at the Hutt . Recreation Ground was" .of a scrappy nature and it was not until well on that any degree of combination between either rearguard |was seen. With Hutt obtaining possession of the leather from the set scrums almost at will, some good opportunities were presented to the backs, but slowness allowed the opposition insides to be up in time to effectively smother.
St. Patrick's opened the scoring when from a melee Thurston went over and Hatchard converted. One of the best pieces ofc determined play by the Hutt ,pack resulted in a try by Potter. This was followed by another foot rush from which the backs carried on and Holland scored. Sargisson later kicked a field goal. ,
The opening period of the second half was somewhat uninteresting but play brightened considerably later. From a loose, rush Riwai gathered in and scored at the posts, Dance converting. St. Patrick's were unlucky not to take the lead when a penalty shot by Geary hit the cross bar and bounced back. After that Hutt were almost continuously on attack. The best piece of combined work by the Hutt insides resulted in Burton scoring the winning try. The final score was:—Hutt 13, St. Patrick's Old Boys
