EXCITING FINISH
M.8.0.8. BEAT W.C.0.8.
In defeating Wellington College Old Boys by a margin of one point at Anderson Park, Marist Brothers Old Boys gave a promising performance and deserved their win. Their total was" made up of two tries, one field goal, and one penalty goal, whereas College Old Boys collected their points from three penalty goals and a try.
The general form on both sides was surprisingly good for the initial game of the season, and the play, which held the interest of the large crowd from start to finish, was marked throughout by solid tackling and excellent kicking. There was room for improvement in the positional play of the backs on both sides, but this will no doubt correct itself as the season advances. Quickly warming up to the play, the Marist backs set about their task in workmanlike manner, and Fitzgerald scored a try. During the remainder of the spell play was of an even nature, and before the interval Baldwin kicked a penalty goal for College Old Boys, and O'Malley kicked a field goal for Marist'. : Improving considerably after the'change-over, College Old Boys set up a sustained attack, and two further penalty goals by Baldwin and a 'try by Rowe placed them in a strong position. Determined rucking and accurate kicking by Marist, however, eventually brought results, and McGreevy provided the high light of the game when he scored. Shortly before the end O'Malley gave Marist the lead when he- kicked a penalty goal. The result was Marist Brothers Old Boys 13, Wellington College Old Boys 12. The referee was Mr. B. Matthews.
