ATHLETIC JUST WIN
TINDILL'S DROP-KICK
A field goal by Tindill has saved Athletic more than once. Its greater value than a penalty goal gave Athletic the narrowest of wins over Johnsonville, at Johnsonville. Exploiting their shock and spoiling tactics "to the full, Johnsonville worried Athletic considerably, and, if anything, were unlucky to lose. Two of M. Kenny's kicks missed the mark very narrowly. The match was a hard struggle from first to last. Play began at a merry pace, with Welsh starting some solid Johnsonville attacks by several penetrating runs that were well supported by the forwards. However, the Ath-letic-forwards gradually brought pressure to bear, and Tindill was given a liberal supply of the ball, several back attacks being -launched. Dangerous threats to the suburban line were effectively blocked until eventually Tindill moved well back from a scrum near $he posts. Although his intentions were well advertised, Johnsonville v/ere given little chance of stopping a neat field goal.
Shortly after the interval J. Burns opened Johnsonville's account with a penalty goal, and this encouragement inspired the local team to a prolonged and relentless assault on Athletics citadel. Clever use of the side line1 by • their half-back and full-back was a big factor in Johnsonville's bottling up of attempts by Athletic to open out the play. Athletic had several anxious moments in holding desperately to their lead, but were able to take a turn on attack towards the end of the game, which ended Athletic 4, Johnsonville 3. Th referee was Mr. T. G. Taylor.
