LADIES' GOLF

N.Z. AUTUMN TOURNEY

DIFFICULT CONDITIONS

A strong wind from the north, accompanied at times by driving rain, made conditions for play today in the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union's Autumn foursomes more difficult than yesterday, when the first and second rounds were played. This morning the third round of the autumn tourney was held and those players who were eliminated from the major competition yesterday participated in flight and bogey competitions.

This afternoon a start was made with the fourth round, and after the semifinals tomorrow morning the final will be contested in the afternoon.

With the elimination yesterday of the recognised New Zealand leading players in the first round and the defeat of the holders of the title, Miss H. Griffen (Hutt) and Mrs. Monkman (Hutt), in the second round, the result was very open when play resumed this morning. A\ BIG WIN. First home in the third round today were Mrs. A. N. Slater (Hutt) and Mrs. D. Chrisp (Gisborne) who recorded one of the biggest wins of the tournament by beating Mrs. McKenzie (Miramar) and Mrs. Houston (Miramar) by 8 up and 6 to play. The winners, who are [both on a 6 mark, had to concede to their opponents five strokes which made the win even more meritorious. Excellent combination was the secret of their success and suggested that they might be one of the hardest pairs to! beat. i

Mrs. Norman and Mrs. Ashe played steadily to be 3 up at the turn against I Mrs. Richmond and Mrs. Banks. They increased their lead to win comfortjably by 5 and 4. Features of the game were the very accurate approaching and putting of the winners. Miss S. Collins and Miss J. Horwell, j and Mrs. G. Hollis and Miss Illston, j with fairly comfortable wins, played! their way into the third round of the flight handicap. Mrs. G. Roberts and Mrs. W. Blundell played very sound golf to score an easy win over Mrs. Pacey and Mrs. Green by 6 up and 4 to play in the same competition. Another interesting match in the flight competition was provided by the j Christchurch players, Miss V. Fleming { and Miss H. Buchanan, and Mrs. Whyte and Mrs. Kingscbte. Miss Fleming and Miss Buchanan had to concede several strokes -to their opponents, who were playing. particularly well considering the unpleasant conditions, aiid they were finally beaten' by 2 up and 1 to play.
