SWIMMING

CARNIVAL AT KARORI

UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER

Fortune was not .kindly disposed to those conducting the combined University and Karori Swimming Club's carnival at the Karori baths on Saturday afternoon. Indications in the morning were that the carnival would be held in ideal swimming weather, but early in the afternoon it became cold with a nippy southerly wind. When rain fell about half way through the programme swimming conditions were made miserable for competitors, but keenness was undiminished and events continued to be run off efficiently. .'

A spectacular and clever display of all types of dives, fancy and ordinary, was given by Mr. S. C. Dyer. Australian champion diver, and member of the N.S/W. diving troupe. Mr. Dyer added humour to the programme in a burlesque diving item when he appeared in a bright red and yellow clown suit and showed how diving should not be done.

During the afternoon the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), who was accompanied by Mrs. Hislop, addressed the gathering. He briefly referred to the work done by those who had endeavoured to establish the Karori baths and expressed the hope that the baths would long continue to serve a, useful purpose. He congratulated the two clubs on their enterprise in conducting the carnival.

The trophies were presented by the member of Parliament for the district, Mrs. C. S. Stewart.
