BUSH DESTROYED

FIERCE FIRE IN NORTH

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day,

Much valuable bush ,■ was destroyed in a fierce and spectacular fire which swept through 250 acres of the Forestry Department's plantation between Chelsea and Kauri Point last evening.

Leaping 40 feet high the flames at one time threatened to cross a fire break in the bush reserve of the estate of the Colonial Sugar Co." No i water supply was available, but a | large army of volunteers assisted brigadesmen in beating out the flames. Some fear was felt for the safety of the naval armament depot at Kauri Pbint, but the flames were subdued without it being necessary to use the powerful water hydrants at the depot. Dense volumes of smoke drifted along North Shore almost as far as Devonport.
