FITNESS WEEK

VARIED PROGRAMME

SPORTS AND IfARADES

Keen public interest is being taken in Fitness Week, which is to be held from February 18 to 25. The idea emanated from the National Council of Physical Welfare, and letters were sent to every city, borough, town board, and county in the Dominion asking for the cooperation of the local bodies and all those interested in the well-being of the community. ; The response has shown that-people are becoming more "fitness conscious." A representative committee has been working diligently and enthusiastically for some time on an interesting and comprehensive programme. It is not intended that everyone shall be keen and enter wholeheartedly into the various fixtures staged during the week, ahd then at the end return to the daily routine forgetting. all that the sponsors of the week have been trying to teach. It is hoped that the impetus given to all will mean that everyone will continue with their training. Ofißcials of all the sports organisation^— winter and summer, outdoor ,and indoor—will assist and will be only too glad to receive recruits and "to give necessary information. MASSED PARADE. The week opens with a- massed, parade on Saturday, February 18, conu mencing at 10.30 a.m. Many hundreds interested in various sports will take part in the parade, and so the public will be able to judge for themselves the value to them of any sport in which they are specially interested. Having seen the procession, onlookers will want to watch, the assembly at the Basin Reserve. On Saturday evening a concert will be held in the Town f Sail, when an excellent programme,; comprising gymnastic turns, fencing, folk dancing, and national dancing, will be featured. Every day there will be championship meetings of different kinds. It will be possible to see the best athletes, swimmers, life-savers, polo players, tennis players, etc, in action. The school children are concentrating on outdoor activities during the month, and there will be opportunities to see them, too. It is hoped that it will be possible to have an athletic day for the primary schools, when the children will, compete against each other in friendly, rivalry. There will be a luncheon for women in the Y.W.C.A.. Boulcott Street, ahd an afternoon meeting to meet Miss Ruth Woodsmall. All women's organisations are invited to a meeting in the Concert Chamber on Wednesday afternoon, when there will be a talk on health under the auspices of the Wellington Health Club.
