AMATEUR ATHLETICS

GOOD PERFORMANCES

DEWAR SHIELD MEETING

; Ideal conditions and several admir- ; able performances, marked the first Dewar Shield inter-club athletic meeting of the season held at Hataitai Park pn Saturday afternoon. Points for the shield were registered as follows:— "Wellinigton 6, Kiwi 4, University 1, Combined Old. Boys 1. There, w&s some particularly . good running in the quarter-mile events. J. Pi Evans, the youtbftd Wellington Club athlete, once again gave evidence of his exceptional capacity by getting home in the first race from the provincial champion, C Robinson, in 50 l-ssec —excellent moving. • indeed fbr the ; track./ Evans later registered 51 >2-ssee for the same distance in the relay race. G. Quinn, national sprint titleholder, ,took, the second quarter in 51 4r-ssec Tt was his first run at the' distance since he pulled a leg muscle some weeks ago. It was not his best form. He will improve considerably in the next fortnight W. Evenson, who has just turned 19, ran an especially good race in the third • quarter-mile. He won well in 51.2-ssec. '...*. t . " BEST MILE. ' ■ When P. Bay returned 4min 31 3-ssec for the second mile event he produced the fastest time recorded for the distance at Hataitai Park this season. Bay, a former Waitaki' Boys' High School student, is a more than useful miler, one who should develop considerably in the next* year or two. Track walking, largely as the result of the activities of D. C. Pederson, has shown a marked revival this summer, and Saturday's three-mile event drew a large field, even if it was a field of very mixed talent. It was an excellent contest so far as the first four men were concerned. About forty yards covered them at the finish and that is hot much in three *niles. J. Ashton, a young walker of particular promise, won the event from ■'N'McC&rthy, Who: might possibly have • been successful had he stayed: with the leading bunch all the way. After heing the early leader, he fell back _hto fourth place, coming again with a 'fereit rattle' over the last 150 yards. - ' There were some encouraging field performances too. Hogan threw the hammer 130ft 9in, the best effort, by^a Wellington athlete for a long time; K. Guv former national champion, put the shot 41ft lin, and E. Phillips showed excellent all-round form. He won the discus throw and the hop, step, and jump, and was placed second infive. other events. Fagg, formerly of Otago, cleared 10ft 6in in the pole vault. A?arade for the A. C. Kitfo^Shirfd was held in conjunction with_the gathering.
