LEARNING TO SWIM
(Original.) Joan lived with her mother and < i brother, Bob, in a small house by the sea. Every day Joan and Bob tried to learn to swim. Bob soon learned i but Joan just couldn't. She tried dcs- ■ perately hard, but she always sank and forgot to move her arms as well |as her feet. Every day she tried, but I all in vain.
One day, when she was lying lazily on the beach, she heard a cheery voice behind her say, "Hullo!" Joan jumped up with a start and beheld a brownfaced fishermaa with a friendly Smile. Strangely enough, «?can started talking to him, and then shfe told him about the swimming problem and suddenly, the fisherman afeked her if she would like to go fishing with him. Joan glowed with pleasure. "There's nothing I'd like better," she replied. Next moment they were sailing peacefully along the clear, stimulating water in a lovely little boat. When they got far enough out, the fisherman threw out. his net and gave Joan a fishing-line. After satisfying themselves with a large supply of fish, they turned back and were nearing the shore when, unexpectedly, Joan leaned too far over the side of the boat and fell, head-first, into the water! Uttering a scream, she dived through the water and swam over to the "Strangely enough," Joan almost sang. "It must have been the fright that made me swim." After thank-, ing the fisherman for such a lovely afternoon she rushed home as fast aa possible to break the news to Bob and her mother. "At-lafet.l can swim!" . "NEW ZEALAND ROSE" (13). Karori.
