HIGH TREASON
GERMANS SENTENCED
TERMS OF IMPRISONMENT
(Received January 11, 11 a.m.) \
BERLIN, January 10.
Ernest Niekisch was sentenced to penal servitude for life for high treason in attempting to re-establish a prohibited political party. Wilhelm Drexler was sentenced to 3£ years in gaol. Karl Troeger was convicted only of attempting to re-establish the party, and he was sentenced to twenty-one months* imprisonment, but was freed immediately as his period of detention was counted.
The trial of the three men, who were charged with high treason and plotting the assassination of Herr Hitler, began last week. Eighteen others will be tried later. The public were hot admitted. The trial was not then concerned with the charges of attempted assassination of Herr Hitler, which it was thought possible would not be heard if they were sentenced to death on the charge of anti-Nazi activity. According to the indictment the accused drew lots to decide who would attempt to assassinate Herr Hitler. Stores of arms and explosives were allegedly secreted in various parts of Germany.
