TECHNICAL CLASSES

HUTT VALLEY PROBLEM

The need for further accommodation at the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College was stressed in the annual report of the principal (Mr. A. MrFadyen), which was considered at the final meeting of the year of the board of managers last evening. Mr. McFadyen stated that as reported in 1937 there was still "-.a lack of accommbdation for- the manual training classes in cookery. There had again been a Saturday morning class in cookery. The existing cookery room was being used to the fullest extent in the daytime and it almost seemed as if accommodation were required for at least five more half-days weekly. This -would justify the provision of another cookery room. The library had to be used for class purposes both for day and evening classes; and this in effect had restricted its use for real library purposes. The college had now reached the stage where further accommodation was required for the store of library books and texts and this could only be met-by thejprovision of ,inlaid cases situated on the floor of the library room. The chairman reported, that a conference .had been held with the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) and the Minister of Finance (the Hon. ,W. Nash), who had sympathetically considered the needs of the board. A committee to,report on the development of secondary education in the Hutt Valley had been set up and had already made some preliminary recommendations.
