GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
(From "The Post's" Representative.) NELSON, September 8. The final of the Nelson Women's Golf Club championship ' was played last week between. Mrs. H. Topliss and Miss J. Betts, when the latter won 2 up and 1. The previous week Mrs. Topliss and Mrs. Field, a low-handicap player from Palmerston North, had a great struggle in the semi-final, and' Mrs. Topliss only succeeded in winning at the nineteenth hole. With that match in mind, spectators looked forward to an exciting final, .and their hopes were fully justified. Miss Betts started brilliantly, went out in two under par, and was six up on her opponent. From then on the struggle became keener, and at the end of the morning round, Mrs. Topliss was only 2 down. Some beautiful golf was seen in the second round, providing many thrills for the large following, and at the 32nd hole Mrs. Topliss was one up. Miss Betts played excellent golf at the next two holes, and, with a perfect 5 at the thirty-fifth won the match and the championship for the third time. Some of the spectators were Mr. and Mrs. E. Leggatt, Mrs. D. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Cock, Mrs. C. Milner, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Leggatt, Mrs. H. Robison, Miss G. Wilson, Miss Gray, Mrs. N. Rout, Mrs. X>. C. Low, and Miss L. Lucas. Happy Gatherings. On two days of this week Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Searle were "at home" between 5 and 7 o'clock to many friends. The days were cool enough for a fire to be appreciated, and the rooms looked charming with bowls of spring flowers. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Hodgson, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. After two or three weeks of farewell parties given for. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Harley, the final "effort" was given by the guests of honour themselves, who were "at home" last Friday evening to their many friends and recent hosts. It was a very delightful party, and the happy atmosphere was a slight indication of. the esteem I and affection in which the host and hostess are held. Some of the guests were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Harley, Mr. and Mrs. N. McLaren, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Fell, Mr. and Mrs. J. Leggo, Mr. and Mrs. William Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Duke, Mr.,and Mrs. Howard Harley. Miss L. Luca, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Smart, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Neale, Mr. and Mrs. R. Stedman, and Mr. and Mrs. P. Boyes. Personals. Dr. and Mrs. Usher. Auckland, have been spending a few days in Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. A. Browne, Pelorus Sounds, are in town for a few days. Miss R. Blaikie and Miss McKenzie, Gore, have been staying with Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Searle, Nelson College. Mrs. W. B. Griffen, Richmond Avenue, has. returned from the North Island. Miss W. McKee, Tasman, left this week for a holiday in the North Island. Mrs. A. D. Macfarlane and Miss Mary Macfarlane have returned; from Wellington. Miss Enga Washbourn has returned from Blenheim.
