A HAPPY GATHERING
A very happy evening was spent at the E.S.U. rooms on Saturday night ' when the committee of the Women's National Reserve, which is in charge of the work done at the Memorial Cemetery for Soldiers and Sailors at Karori, entertained the Girl Guides and the Salvation Army '•Guards," who, throughout the year, had done -good work in attending the scattered graves of soldiers in the whole cemetery ensuring that none were neglected, although not in the special part allocated. ' . . Over 100 girls attended, and games and'competitions were enjoyed as well as musical and elocutionary items. Lieutenant-Colonel Cowles (who represented the R.S.A,) expressed great appreciation of all the work the* girls were doing. The memory of departed comrades was very dear to them all, and it was gratifying to know that their last resting-place was tended by loving hands. Mrs. F. Beales, Mrs. Parkinson, and Mrs. Hewitt represented the workers. The committee was assisted by Miss E. M. Black, Miss E. Cook, Miss E. Miller, and Miss J. Barker. Contributors to the programme were Joan Casey and Noeline Edwards (piano solo), Betty Henry, Iris Westrup, Jean Craig (recitations) the "Ngaio Six" (medley), 33 Northland Group (haka), and Petone Company Group (songs). Much talent was displayed by the girls in both vocal and instrumental items. Miss G. Nannested added to the programme by giving some humorous items. Winners of the competitions were Joyce Dixon, Shirley Bentley, Valm Paulirii, Daphne Trevelyan, Joan Baylis, Betty Plant, and Ruth Grasson. A dainty supper was much appreciated, and those who had arranged the party were rewarded by the happy faces of the girls who had done good work all the year without any expectation of reward.
For the spring bridesmaid choose yards upon yai'ds of embroidered eyelet organdie over a petticoat of rayon taffeta adorned with demure bows to , shimmer through the gown. A blue bag squeezed in the washingup water will give a lovely gloss to china and prevent grease from clinging'j to the side of the bowl.
