PLEASANTLY VARIED
V.M.C.A. LADIES'AUXILIARY
A pleasant and enjoyable afternoon was spent yesterday in. the YM.C.A. lounge by members of the Ladies* Auxiliary and their friends. -- The hostesses were Mesdames Ross, Appleton, Stevens, Shepherd} Vernon, and Henley, and' the lounge* looked very attractive with its bright fire and bowls of poppies and daffodils.
The programme,' which had been arranged by Mrs. Ross, was very mucW enjoyed. Miss Mollie Purdue gave two 'cello solos, and Mrs. Walter Duncan sang a group of Maori songs. Mrs. Hamilton Dickson was the accompanist. Elocutionary items were contributed by Miss Thompson. An interesting address was given by Mrs. H. D. Bennett on "Maori Lore." Many of their, myths, she said, went back to Scriptural times, the "Myth of Creation* particularly instancing this. Other aspects of Maori life, were touched upon by Mrs. Bennett, who concluded with the hope that the equality of Maori and pakeha in New Zealand would show the wayfor other countries where a colour line has been drawn.
The president, Mrs. R. S. Maunder, thanked Mrs. Bennett for her address, and also Mrs. Ross, the artists, and hostesses for making the function so successful.
A "Spring Fair" will be held next month, being the culminating effort for this year.
A dainty afternoon tea was served, and the entertainers were presented with charming posies, the gifts of Miss Black.
