FANCY DRESS DANCE
LABOUR PARTY AT MELROSE
A successful fancy-dress dance was held at Melrose on Monday night under the auspices of the ~ local branch of the New Zealand Labour Party.
The official visitors included the Hori. R. Semple (member, for the district) and Mrs. Semple, Mr. A. G. Hultquist, M.P., Mr. E. P. Meachen, M.P., Mr. C. A. Barrell, M.P., and Mrs. Barrell, the Hon. B. C. Robbins, M.L.C., and Mesdames Germ and Sutton. Mr. Semplk was welcomed with musical honours, and in a characteristic speech thanked the gathering for the enthusiasm displayed on his behalf. During the evening demonstration dances were given-by pupils of Miss Margaret O'Connor,' elocutionary items by Miss Ngaira Collins, and songs by Mrs. Tracy, who also led the community sing.
Mrs. Semple and Mr. Hultquist, judges for the fancy-dress display, awarded the prizes to Mrs. H. Simpson for her excellent characterisation of Mr. McDougaU;,;M.?., and* to Master Bruce Simpson, as Minister of Native Affairs. In the "Back to Childhood" section, Mrs. L. Cross and Mr. Glover gained the honours. Prizes were donated by Mesdames S. Cross, L. Cross, H. Simpson, Tonkin, Miss M. A. Todd, and M£ Bull. ; 1\ '%.^
The decorative scheme in the party colours was bright and cheerful, and Mr: and Mrs. Grath and Mr. Tonkin were responsible for the excellent dance music. Extras were played by Mrs. Viggers and Mr. Fowler. Mr, E. Bull carried out the duties of M.C.
An excellent supper was served by the executive members, who were complimented on the great success of the gathering, which concluded with the singing of "AuidrLangSyne.'*
