THE HAMBLETONIAN

EASY VICTORY FOR MCLIN

The Hambletonian Stakes, leading light-harness three-year-old race of the world, was decided at Goshen, New York, on August 10, and resulted in a clear-cut victory for McLin, a bay colt by Mr. McElwyn from Ethelinda, by Peter the Great.

There were ten competitors for the first heat, and Long Key was a staunch favourite, with McLin second in demand. The field had travelled little over a furlong when McLin drew to the front, arid from this stage on it was only a procession. The second heat was run in similar fashion, McLin again assuming command early and being in the van all the way. The colt ran the miles in 2min 2£sec and 2min 2fsec respectively; the former time being equal to that registered by Greyhound when he scored in the Hambletonian in 1935.

Earl's Princess Martha, by Protector, by reason pf her second and seventh placings, earned second, place, and Champian, by Volomite, secured the minor money. The stake amounted to 37,962 dollars, of which McLin received 19,944 dollars, and Earl's Princess Martha 7252.

The feature of the first day of the Goshen carnival was the Trotting Derby, a free-for-all, in which.Greyhound and Rosalind measured strides. The latter was expected to extend her grey rival, and the first heat was a thrilling affair. Rosalind went to the front at barrier rise, and it was not until the last few strides that Greyhound gained the better of her to win by a head. In the second heat S. Palm, driver of Greyhound, took no risks, assuming the rojle of pacemaker from the outset and finally won easily by three and a half lengths. It was an impressive performance, and considering that the grey gelding was not extended there was a great deal of merit in his lmin 59£ sec for the mile. He rah his final quarter of .the mile in 28sec.

In France it is customary to make contributions to racing charities after winning big races, and, to mark Nearco.'s win in the Grand Prix de Paris, Mr. F. Tesio distributed £350 in that manner.
