A FAST HALF-MILE

America and New Zealand are not the only places where fast times are registered, and it is interesting to note that in- Queensland recently Teddy Derby ' paced half a mile in lmin 0 2-ssec. The following is taken from the "Australian Trotting Record": —"Teddy Derby, a pacer that races without hopples, on Wednesday last at the Brisbane Show ran an exhibition half-mile in lmin 4£sec. On Saturday night he succeeded in his attempt to reduce this, and again from a standing start, paced by a galloper, he succeeded in putting. up the fast time of lmin 0 2-ssec. The first quarter took 29 [2-ssec, and the second 31sec. The only boots worn were quarter and shin boots in front. When he did 2min 10 2-ssec in the attempt to lower Machine Brick's 2min 12sec, he proved his speed and set Lawn Derby, who subseauently registered 2min 9£sec, a bigger task than anticipated. Teddy Derby, foaled in 1930, is a bay stallion by David Belmont from Miss Brisbane, a mare by Mambrino Derby from a dam by Toledo from Kitty, by Vancleve (imp.), from a Childe Harold mare. As Globe Derby (sire of David Belmont) was also by Mambrino Derby, blood of the latter is represented on both sides of the pedigree.
