A PROMINENT STUD FARM

The southern studmaster C. S. Donald is making a bold bid to become one of the biggest bloodstock breeders in the Dominion, and the importation of Lusty Volo from America means that he will incorporate into his stud three of the leading trotting strains of the world. When it is considered that besides his training operations, which at present extend to some twenty-five horses, to which he will shortly add twenty two-year-olds, it will give some idea of the magnitude of the work being undertaken by the Belfast trainer. . " Jack Potts, by reason of the phenomenal run of success gained by his representatives last season, is entitled to be ranked as the leading progenitor of speed in the Dominion. No less than 99 winners were credited to him, and between them they earned £25,798, over £7000 more than the sum won by sons and daughters of Rey de pro, who finished second on the winning sires' list. There are eight yearlings on the farm claiming Calumet Axworth as their sire, and it must be admitted that they are a fine advertisement for the American stallion. They are moulded on almost perfect lines, and some are natural trotters, with others favouring the trotting gait. Most of them are splen-did-actioned youngsters, and at this stage of their preparation there is reason to look upon their future optimistically. Calumet Axworth as yet has had little opportunity to prove his worth as a sire, but judging by the promise of his gets to date he should be a worthy addition to the ranks, of stallions in the Dominion.

Lusty Volo, who was recently purchased by Donald, is expected to arrive in October, and he is to take up stud duties this season. He is a valuable addition to the stud, arid his importation serves to introduce new blood into the establishment. He is a proved racehorse, and has already proved himself as a sire of speed in America, where he has got many winners.
