OBITUARY
MRS. LUCY JANE MEHARRY.
Mrs. Meharry, who passed away recently, was one of the old pioneers of the West Coast. She was born in Australia and came to New Zealand at an early age with her parents and lived on the West Coast. She married Mr. Alexander Meharry (late of the Land and Survey Department, Hokitika), who had previously been farming and sawmilling.
Mrs. Meharry was a noted horsewoman in the Canterbury district, winning competitions on very spirited horses such as Artillery March, Deedre, and Harkaway, which had never been ridden before by a woman. She was never beaten on a showground in riding, jumping, or driving. She rode over three flights with 16 men and after tying with Mr. Spencer, .of Reefton, she succeeded in winning the competition. Mrs. Meharry was a friend of everyone, and was known for her great kindness and helpfulness. She will be missed by a large circle of friends. She leaves behind three daughters and three sons and many grandchildren. The sons are Messrs. George Meharry (New Plymouth), Arthur Meharry and Allan Meharry (Wellington). The daughters are Mrs. Horan, Mrs. O'Malley, and Mrs. J. Dry den (Wellington).
