STAR BOATING CLUB

SMOKE CONCERT

"SPIRIT STILL ALIVE"

The annual smoke concert of the Star Boating Club was held on Saturday night.

Mr. A. D. Bayfeild, president of the club, proposing the toast of "The Club," referred to the long association of the club with the" city.

"If the records were looked back I think a great many prominent citizens of Wellington have been members of this club, and that is one of the reasons why I think the club may congratulate itself and be proud of its record, said Mr. Bayfeild. Mr. Bayfeild expressed the hope that the club .would continue to prosper. "The present members are fully conscious of the glorious traditions of this club," said Mr. J. I. Thodey (club captain), replying, "and they do live up to those traditions." Althpugh in recent years the club might not have had a tremendous amount of success, the spirit was still alive. If the club members would keep to the club and stick to the ideals of the club, then it would go on as in the past, and he was sure that many more championships and rowing wins would come its way. Mr. W. M. Willis, proposing the toast of "Kindred Clubs," said that one great %feature of Wellington clubs was the way in which they pulled together. Now and then a bit of bickering went on, but it was a bad sign if everything went smoothly, as it meant something was wrong somewhere. (Laughter..) The record of the Petone Club, said Mr. Willis, in winning the Mothes Shield, Redding Shield, Norton, Cup, and inter-club eights, was a wonderful performance. (Applause.) Representatives of the Wellington and Petone Clubs responded. Other toasts honoured were:— Controlling Bodies," proposed by^ Mr. K. E. May and responded to by Mr. A. Ci. Cockroft (New Zealand Rowing Council) and Mr. T, M. Hinkley (Wellington Rowing Association), "The Prizewinners" (Mr. T. M. Hinkley and Mr. IF. Tinteren), and "The Press" (Mr. G. C. Broad).
