ANNUAL "SMOKO"
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES
The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in Wellington, now in its fifty-fifth year of existence, held a successful annual smoke concert in the Mayfair Cabaret on Saturday evening, and the many trophies won during the season were presented.
The Commodore (Mr. W. T. Barton), who presided, said that the season had been very successful. The Sanders Clip had been won with Nigel Blair and his crew for the second time in succesispn, Blair getting three firsts and two seconds. Added to that, Clive Highet went to Australia with the Impudence and got four firsts and one second in seven starts, facing competition from all over the Commonwealth. Blair had also done. exceptionally well in the Campbell Cup. Mr. Barton recalled the early days, and said that the season's record showed that the old tradition was*eing kept going very well. Captain F. A. Macindoe, proposing the toast of the club, mentioned that the club was celebrating its fifty-fifth year of existence, and said that the sport of yachting instilled in young men the qualities of self-reliance, initiative, and courage. The club was the oldest yacht club in Wellington, and the first commodore had been Sir William Jervois. The warrant to fly the Blue Ensign was obtained by Lord Glasgow, and Lord Jellicoe had been a life member.
The toast was responded to by Colonel J. J. ; Esson, president of the club. Mr. H. A. Hardham proposed the toast of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association, and Mr. A. Johnson replied.,
Mr. R. H. Bennett, vice commodore, who proposed the toast of the Wellington Harbour Board, said he did not think yachting would have gone very far had it not been for the support that had come from the Harbour Board.
Mr. C. M. Turrell, replying on behalf of the Harbour Board, said the board had a great deal of sympathy with the club, and had always tried to do everything it could to help the club along. As chairman of the board they could rely on him and also the other members of the board.
The toast of "Kindred Clubs" was proposed by Mr. C. D. A. Highet, rearcommodore.

Coleman), 1; Seabird (W. Percival), 2. Maxwell Cup (veterans' race): Ailsa (J. L. Barnard), 1; Viola (Mr. Agar), 2. Seabird Cup: Wylo (C. Neil), 1; Argo (R. N. Bennett and R. L. Bowater), 2.
