COUNTY MATCHES P. SMITH'S FINE EFFORT (Received June 29, noon.) LONDON, June 28. Several of the matches in the latest series of the county championship could not be finished owing to interference by rain, and in most cases the scoring was low, with the bowlers returning better figures than the batsmen. Also, several of the teams were without the services of Test players. , P. Smith put up another fine performance for Essex, taking five for 75 and four for 38, and making 95 runs against Hampshire. In a low scoring match which Worcestershire won by 3 runs, E. Davies bowled particularly well for Glamorgan. Results are:— Derbyshire v. Northamptonshire, at Derby.—Derbyshire, 230 and 173 for six declared. Northamptonshire, 98 (Mitchell six for 15) and 67 for two. Derbyshire won on the first innings. Essex v. Hampshire, at Brentwood. —Hampshire, 194 (P. Smith five for 75) and 122 (P. Smith four for 38). Essex, 338 (P. Smith 95). Essex won by an innings and 22 runs. Glamorgan v. Worcestershire, at Llanelly.—Worcestershire, 71 (E. Davies five for 19, Clay four for 20) and 192 (E. Davies five for 55). Glamorgan, 103 and 157 (Howorth five for 68). Worcestershire won by 3 runs. Kent v. Sussex, at Tunbridge Wells. —Kent, 446 (Woolley 162, Valentine 118). Sussex, 157 and, following on, 125 for three. Kent won on the first innings. Lancashire v. Surrey (L. Hopwood's benefit), at Manchester.—Lancashire, 291 (Washbrook 107). ■ Surrey, 125 (Pollard four for 39), and, following on, 102 (Pollard four fbr 37). Lancashire won on the first innings.

Somerset v. Middlesex, at Bath. — Somerset, 249 (Buse 95; Smith six for 68) and 77 for one. Middlesex, 84 (Andrews seven for 58). and, following on, 241 (Hulme 82). Somerset won by nine wickets.

Gloucestershire v. Warwickshire, at Birmingham. — Gloucestershire, 148 (Mayer five for 43) and 190 (Mayer six for 32). Warwickshire, 305 (Ord 88) and 34 for none. Warwickshire won by ten wickets.
