WESTERN HUTT ROAD

EXTENSION URGED Extension of the Western Hutt Road j through to Petone was urged by Councillor J. C. Burns at the meeting of the Petone Borough Council last evenins. Councillor Burns said the present work on the road would soon be completed and* it would become the main highway to Silverstream, diverting much traffic from the Lower Hutt Borough. He had seen in the Press that the Public Works Department was considering putting up a ramp at Melling as an alternative to extending the road to the Grand National Hotel at Petone. If the council did not act soon it would be too late. Councillor W. H. Edwards considered that the question concerned the joint committee of the Petone and Lower i Hutt Boroughs. Councillor J. Cumming stated that although Councillor Burns's idea was an admirable one, he did not know if tha extension of the road was advisable economically. However, the road must be extended eventually The Town Clerk (Mr. H. Firth) said that the matter was brought before the Department about twelve months ago and the Hon. R. Semple said he would inspect the vicinity. "He came out." said Councillor J. Huggan. The council decided to approach the < Public Works Department again on ' the matter.
