ANGLO-ITALIAN PACT
DESIRE BY ITALY MODIFICATION OF CLAUSE LONDON; June 19. The Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, is reported to have indicated to the British Ambassador in Rome, Lord Perth, that Italy would welcome a modification of the clause in the Anglo-Italian Pact preventing its implementation until the Italians have been withdrawn from Spain, says the Rome correspondent of the "Sunday Times." Count Ciano, in explaining that Italy had fulfilled all the clauses except those relating to Spain, contended that Italy was not responsible for the fact that Spain remains an obstacle. On the contrary, he said, the delays have been due to the slowness of the Non-intervention Committee and the obstruction of other countries, notably France.
