', The opening day's play in the Kil-birnie-University match, played oh the Kilbirnie Recreation' Ground, provided an afternoon16i interesting cricket,:the dismissal of Kilbirnie for 191 runs and University's; spir-ifed reply> of 134.,iain&' for the loss of only three wickets promising ah exciting-second day's play. .The high light of the afternoon was the sterling display given by J. A. Harpur;■ (University). He compiled 80 runs in ;his opening partnership with ■ApG;''\V'iren,fthese players producing a nrsfrwicketi partnership of ,112 runs before Sa separation was effected. Wireri;.:although less enterprising than his- partner, played a valuable innings for 'his-side; ' - ■■■:'.'■ Securing: first use'iof the wicket, Kilbirnie opened with Rice and Coltman, both batsmen setting a fast scoring rate from the. start, but a neat catch behind the j wickets by Lunn off Knowsley's bowling sent Coltman to: the pavilion when the score board showed 46 runs. Wrigley joined Rice, who wasi batting confidently, but keen fielding kept the scoring-rate down. Knowsley find Trickleljank were causing the batsmen a great deal'of concern. Dean brought about the dismissal of Rice with the score' at 72 runs. The retiring batsman had' compiled 40 runs of this total, finding the boundary, six times. . W.ell supported'by the-fleld, the University bowlers how dominated the play, Parsloe,' Ward, Wrigley, Ltfbransky, Christophersen; and Wilson all being disposed of for the addition of 69 runs., Bain was offering a stubborn resistance and when joined by Broit both batsmen attacked the bowling vigorously, advancing the score by 44 runs before being separated.- Alleri failed to -last, and the Kilbirnie innings closed with a score of 191 runs, the> lowest score registered by this side during the present season. Wiren and Harpur opened for University, ' cautious batting, being the main feature of the first hour s play, Wiren in. particular batting with rocklike solidity. Harpur, following a subdued' start, gradually became more aggressive,- and when the score had passed the half-century mark he.gave •av .bright display of batting. His was the first wicket to go, but not before the score-board showed: 112 runs, of which total he had scored 80 runs, including eleven 4's and a 6. Wilson's stay at the crease,was short, and Wiren followed a few minutes later, having scored a valuable 38 runs. Harding and Tricklebank were at the crease when stumps were, drawn, the, University score-sheet then showing 134. runs for. the loss of three wickets. Details:— KILBIRNIE. First Innings.
