HUTT V. KARORI
A fresh breeze and a good wicket greeted Hutt arid Karori when they: met on the Hutt Recreation Ground. Karori had first use of the wicket, but not much use was made of the opportunity. If the slips had been more alert, the Karori score would have been much smaller. M. Browne shaped the best of the Karori men, and his; 37 included SQme good, though risky, shots on the off-side. Two 6's over the leg boundary were well-timed' strokes. J. Coupland stayed for some time for 25 before falling to a very fine running catch by McLeod at extra cover. The final total of 148 was moderate. The bowling was steady and the ground fielding excellent. The Hutt batsmen were not disturbed by the early dismissal of Cheevers.i Ross and McCarthy batted freely,! Ross's performance being in keeping? with hiS recent breezy sbatting.; His; 62 runs included, two 6's and nine 4's,: and were made in even time. , AfterRoss's dismissal, Kemp and Aim turned: on some fast cricket, and the1 bowlers got a thorough pasting. Kemp gave ■>'hat looked like a chance behind the; stumps before he had scored, but he gave none afterwards. His off-dnving was glorious—some of his strokes travelled liKe lightning—and it was not till he was past the century that he mistimed a stroke. During his seventyeight minutes' occupation of the batting: creases, Kemp hit sixteen 4's. and with Aim as a partner, added 132 for the, fourfh/«wdcket. .Only»fourieemminutes
were taken to run the score from 150 r to 200, and 25 runs were hit from one over delivered by J. Coupland. ' Aim showed sound defence and good 8 judgment for his 45 not out. When , stum.3 were drawn for the day, Hutt had compiled the good total of 259 for the loss of only five wickets. details:— x KARORI. First Innings.
