MIDLAND V. OLD BOYS
Old Boys met Midland at the Basin Reserve No. 1 wicket on Saturday. The fast bowlers, bowling from the northern end, received, plenty of assistance from4he-wind,and[\Ralf&iCMidland>^in
particular, worked up a Jot of pace. At the end of the day's play there was little indication as to which side was in the better position. ' Midland, batting first, compiled the useful total of 210, mainly due to a good performance by Tindill in scoring 44, and a really stubborn knock, interspersed with pretty late cuts, for 64 by" Osborne. Tindill and Hepburn opened the innings and took the total to 50 before the latter "was dismissed. Buddie appeared to be well set when he returned one to Whyte off the latter's first ball. Whyte bowlea excellently lor Old Boys, and mixeo nis leg spinners with balls that went straight through, and though his four vvickets cost 74 runs, they were valuably ones. J. Lamason, bowling into the wind, commanded respect and finished up with three wickets for 30 runs. O'Neill, Ralfe, and. McCrae all ran up useful, tallies among the tailenders, and the score of 210, under the circumstances, was quite creditable. R.. Lamason did good work behind the stumps for Old Boys. This season he has proved himself a very capable wicket-keeper, and his quick stumping is a noticeable feature of his performances. Old Boys commenced their innings shortly after 5 o'clock. With the total at 19, dv Chateau went lbw to O'Neill. Burnette joined Wareham, but the latter, after a promising start, was beaten all the way by a beauty from Ralfe, the ex-Nelson representative, who later had Thompson caught and bowled for 7. The early dismissal of J. Lamason was another setback, and with four wickets down for 66 matters did not look particularly bright) Burnette, however. played quite confidently, as did L. VY Browne, and towards the end of the- day's play the pair were batting well, quite untroubled by the bowling of Fortune and.Hepburn. They played out time. The score then was 105 tor four wickets.
