WELLINGTON From a, comparatively modest beginning—six wickets fell for under a hundred—lnstitute recovered sufficiently to run up 230 against Wellington at the Basin Reserve, and at stumps Wellington had started little better, the score'then being 82 for four wickets^ The steady knock of A. McLean, who went from the .third wicket to the ninth and was going well when he was caught at 65, was the main factor in Institute's recovery, andMcKeown's 52 was also■ a. bright effort.' The wicket was on the fast side, but scoring was slow. Morgan, for Wellington, took' two tail wickets for 2 runs, but Bku> • dell was the mainstay. He bagged only one wicket for 55, but he bowled eighteen overs. .' i The first wickets of Institute went cheaply. Morrissey and Blundell opened the attack for Wellington to R- McLean and Crook, but McLean, at 10, was taken by Morgan at silly mid-on, off Blundell. Crook bettered him by only 2, being skittled by Morrissey. Lang and Scott seemed likely to improve matters until a wicket was thrown away needlessly. Lang, also at 12, tried to recover his crease after attempting a run and Blundell Whipped off the bails. Scott was batting neatly, but Stevens made the outlook darker. Dv Feu was caught by Thomas ofli Stevens's first ball,, and, joined by Bilby, Scott advanced his score to 32 (including four 4's) before he was taken by EILJn Stevens's third aver. Bilby just managed to reach double figures before he was bawled by Ell. 97—6—;10. With Henderson and A. McLean associated, the Wellington averages began to. suffer, and' the rate of scoring was brighter. The partnership put on n2, then Henderson, with the score at 149, w3s bowled by Ell. He had made 28 and had hit six 4's. At the tea adjournment McLean,,accompanied by McKeown, had taken the, score to, 191 for seven wickets, McLean 'being 51" (his 50 was made in 84 minutes^.and McKeown 29. When the 200 went up at 4.25 McLean"had scored 54 and McKeown 35. Twenty-seven runs-later, however, McKeown was run out at 52, and McLean followed at 65, caught by Morrissey off Morgan. Nine wickets were down for 229, and Buchan took1 the total to 230. Left-handed Monteath, one of the Wellington opening men, although uncertain' at times, got away "some great shots and ran up a bright 43 before he, was caught by A. McLean off McKeown: - Thomas, his partnfer, had gone lbw for 1, but Ell scored a confident 28. At stumps the score was 82 for four wickets. , ; Details:— ' INSTITUTE. ' First Innings. Scoring was on the moderate side on Saturday, when a start . was made with the sixth series of matches in the Wellington Cricket Association's senior grade championship competition. Kilbirnie, the championship leaders, on their home ground, failed to reach the 200 mark against University. Kilbirrtie's score of 191 was their lowest this season, the University bowlers, P. Knowsley and W. Tricklebank, gaining the upper hand. A spirited reply was made by University when it came to their turn to bat, 134 runs having been scored for the loss of only three wickets when play ended for the day, The second day's play promises to be full of interest. An exception to the moderate scoring by most teams was provided by Hutt, several of whose batsmen laid the wood on to good purpose, one of them, R. J.. Kemp, scoring 103. Hutt compiled 259 for five wickets and their opponents, Karori, who had first use of the wicket, 14& Institute Old Boys' first innings produced 230 runs against Wellington, who scored 82 for four wickets. Midland hit up 215 against Wellington College Old Boys, 105 for four wickets. Though the weather was sunny, there was a strong wind from the north and this assisted the bowlers.
