SWIMMERS IN DANGER

BATHING AT LOW TIDE

(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day.

Probably the turning of the tide saved the lives of two bathers who were in difficulties at Foxton beach on Saturday afternoon. They were Miss Hately, of Mangere, aged about 16, and Mr. Bruce Lange, aged about 20, of Shannon. Both were bathing while the tide was at its extreme ebb, and were carried out some distance into deep water. Owing to the fact that the tide was out and the beach was posted as unsafe for bathers at this point, no members of the surf club were on duty.

Lange was able to make his way ashore unaided, but Miss Hately remained in difficulties, and a Mr. Cheeseman, of Levin, took the lifeline out. He was unable to reach her and was himself brought ashore exhausted. Mr. J. Barrett, of Palmerston North, then took the line out and was within five yards of Miss Hately when a high wave carried her shorewards and enabled her to make her way to safety.

In the meantime, Captain Vendore, harbourmaster, had been asked to take a launch out across the bar, but the tide was too low to enable this to be done. A dinghy was also rushed out to the ocean beach, but did not arrive in.time to be of use.
