FATALITY AT WAIROA
WARNING BY CORONER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIROA, This Day.
The fifth drowning fatality in the Wairoa County this summer occurred on Saturday afternoon, when Rdderick Frank Barrett, aged about 30, whose parents, it is believed, reside at Blenheim, lost his life in the Mangaruhe Stream.
Barrett, together with L. R. Parkinson and H. L. Sykes, was engaged in a timber-cutting contract at a miU'owned by Mr. W. Bedley, builder, of Wairoa. On Saturday afternoon after lunch the men went for a swim*. After swimming about for some time they climbed on to a bank where an apple tree is growing and ate a quantity of apples which were not ripe. The men then continued their swim, but soon after entering the water Barrett disappeared without warning, the body being recovered about three hours later.
At an inquest the Coroner, Mr. V. E. Winter, returned a verdict of accidental drowning probably caused by cramp. He issued a warning to the public against swimming immediately after meals. This was the second case of its kind to come under his notice this summer.
