One of the early pioneers of the province who took part in the defence of the city when the Maori War in the Waikato was. developing, Mr. Thomas Holder, died at his home in- Northcote at the age of 99 years. Mr. Holder was born near Manchester in 1838. He was trained as an architect and in the spring of 1860 he landed at Auckland from the ship Caduceus. He was for some time engaged in sentry duty along the ridges to the south of the city. The life of- an infantryman in th.c rough country in which they were called, upon to operate did not appeal to him, and, when recruits were called for Colonel Nixon's mounted corps ,he offered his services. Soon after he joined up Mr. Holder met the famous yon Tempsky. After the war Mr. ' Holder resumed his profession as an I architect and for many years prac'.tised at Auckland. He retired many i years ago.
