SUMMER BEAUTY

ESSENTIAL RITUALS

COMPLEXION AND HAIR

When it comes to beauty in summer, it is best to make and keep certain good resolutions from the very first vterm day. A mistake made early in the season may mar the complexion for months ahead, states a writer in the "Cape Times."

The summer girl's wardrobe may be as casual as the sweep of a gull's wing, but any let-down in good grooming marks her for a sloven. It's so easy to neglect beauty details when you spend your weekends in slacks or bathing suit, but if you "go native" you will have a large crop oi beauty problems to struggle with later on, not to mention a present loss of charm. Taking care of your beauty is not such a bother if you spend a few minutes a day on it.

To begin at the top, do you need a new permanent wave? If you want to be free from coiffure worries go to a hairdressing expert for your haircut and wave. If it's becoming to you, have one of the new, rather short bobs that sweep off the face and end in smooth rolls. When skilfully cut and shaped, the hair can be combed into place with little trouble after a swim or outdoor game.

Learn to use those inexpensive hair curlers that can help you turn out a professional-looking coiffure as quickly as your hairdresser does. Summer coiffures should be simple, easy to manage, but very well groomed.

Grooming means not only having a neat coiffure, but keeping hair glossy by plenty of brushing. It involves also protection from the trying and bleaching effects of the sun. You can't go hatless out of doors for hours and expect to have shining, healthy-looking hair afterwards. Hair needs protection as well as complexion, and this goes double for the blondes whose hair so readly becomes dull and streaky when it is exposed for long periods to summer sun. Dark hair withstands sunburn better than the lighter types, but it, too, becomes dry and rustyrlooking under like conditions. One of the handiest things for protecting "the hair —aside from hats—is the kerchief, worn peasant style over the head and tied under the chin. It's smart, it's jaunty and effective. Complexion worries occupy much of I the summer girl's time. It takes patience to develop that fashionable creamy beige shade. A dark brown may be easier for some skins to acquirev but it is being avoided by those in the know. It's too hard to get rid of and it permanently coarsens the skin. Don't ignore opportunities to lead ah outdoor life because your complexion lacks the normal amount of protective pigment. Supply this deficiency by using anti-suriburn make-up, then go and play in the sun. Remember that one application of such a preparation is usually not enough. Take a little bottle or jar of it with you and keep your skin well lubricated.
