MISSIONS TO SEAMEN

Last week was a particularly busy one at the Seamen's Mission, Stout Street. Every night some form of entertainment is organised for the benefit of seamen from overseas, or from the coast, and judging from the cheerful atmosphere in the Mission night after night, they more than appreciate what is being done for them by the Port Chaplain, the Rev. B. J. Williams, and his band of helpers. A whist drive was held one night under the capable supervision of Mr. L. Laurenson, those returning the highest scores being Messrs. C. Olsen and T. Cambus. These evenings are very popular, and strangers to whist are quickly initiated into its mysteries. Dances were held on two other evenings. The music was supplied by a dance band of the Remuera. Novelty dances were the order of the evening and non-dancers found amusement at the billiard and table tennis tables. There followed a "games night," the two former games and cards being played. The hostesses for the week were Mrs. Morton on Monday night and Mrs. Williams (wife of the chaplain) on Wednesday. Supper was served each evening by members of the Harbour. Lights Guild.
