OVERSEA FARES

10 PER CENT. HIGHER

DUE TO INCREASED COSTS

(Received September 11, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, September 10.

I It. is officially announced, states a London message, that passenger fares between England and Australia and Australia and . America will be in- ! creased by an average of 10 per cent. !on October 1.

The spokesman,of the Australian and New Zealand passenger conference explained to the Australian Associated Press agency that the increases will apply to all lines trading between England, Australia, and New Zealand, and also between North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The rates will vary according to the port and the class of vessel, but will be approximately 10 per cent, higher. The increase will not apply to passages booked prior to October 1. The spokesman added that the companies are reluctant to increase the fares, but that it is unavoidable owing to increased operating costs and the higher price of new tonnage. Moreover economies in propulsion have been given back to the public in the form of larger accommodation, thus reducing the payable space. The companies draw attention to the fact that the rates are still below those of 1932.

The local agents of the Canadian Australasian Line stated ' that the above will apply to the trans-Pacific lines between New Zealand and North America. Fares between New Zealand and Australia are not affected.

The New Zealand Shipping Company stated that the increase, which will operate in the case of all major British lines trading between the United Kingdom and New Zealand, will apply to all classes, and any passengers booked after September 10 for sailings after October 1 will pay the new rates^ Those passengers who have already paid deposits will be booked at the old rates, and those who have reservations but have not yet paid deposits will have the benefit of the old rates, provided deposits are paid before October 11,
