AIR LOSSES
JAPANESE RETORT *

LONDON, September 9,
The Tokio correspondent of "The Times" states that the Navy Office, retorting to Chinese claims that they brought down 61 Japanese aeroplanes and buried 81 dead. Japanese airmen between August 14 and 31, declares that the total Japanese planes lost singe the outbreak of hostilities is only 22.
The Japanese claim to have destroyed 194 Chinese aircraft.
Under the Emergency Shipping Control Bill, Japanese shipyards have cancelled contracts to build 17 vessels for the Soviet, aggregating 18,000 tons.
The following telegram was received by the Chinese Consul from Nanking last night:—'
The National Aeronautical Affairs Commission released yesterday the official figures- of the Japanese planes downed by the Chinese air forces in the provinces of Chekiang, Kiangsu, and Anhwei between August 14 and •31. The figures show 29 heavy bombers, 24 ligh. bombers, 5 pursuit planes, and 3 seaplanes, totalling 61. It also revealed that the Chinese authorities have already buried 81 dead Japanese airmen, and judging from the types of the enemy aircraft downed, some 56 other Japanese flyers seem to be missing. Ten or eleven captive airmen are now held at Nanking.
